An Engineering dedication

At last it's sort of over. The bloody 1 month long, blood sucking vampire. The long sleepless nights, followed by grooming up in a record time of less than 15 minutes. The Sudden remembrance of the existence of "gods", their powers, and prayers, in the mere hope of making those powers work. The half asleep morning bus travel, where heads drop down and are up almost immediately with a sigh of frustration and fear. The small chuckles, The window glances with the book wide open facing the bus top. The temporary pause to small chit-chats and gossips, which usually develop into long arguments. All this "once a 6 month torment" is at last over and for the third time. Success or Failure, it's over and done. The hard enduring mission accomplished.

Well, if you are still not able to guess what this is about, then you are definitely a 9+ G.P.A holder in engineering and Calculus is your first love. I am very sorry to say that, you will find this piece totally fictitious and alien. So please, carry on with your browsing which comprises of 10 minute "fb-ing" and long hours of various, so called "knowledge imparting" websites, of which i have rather very little clue. For the majority others, who have made the biggest mistake of choosing engineering as your life career  and those who are about to choose the same ( unaware of the consequences of course), this piece is a dedication.

The day you are born and diagnosis-ed with a penis, you are an Engineer. If the diagnosis is not the former, then you are a Doctor. The latter doesn't work out in reality as getting a doctor seat today involves humongous monetary fund . So they too unfortunately fall prey to Engineering. A few lucky ones are an exception of course . These lucky ones have realised the truth a little bit earlier and have proved themselves right  by choosing arts, science and to a certain extent deemed engineering colleges and medical course. Once the high school is over, most of us choose engineering . "why "??  Because that's what our seniors did ;  Dat's what majority of people around are doing ; Dat's what, is hyped as the only source for landing up in hefty paying jobs; And the most horrible thing is, when we think that their is a factor of "geth" when we tell to someone "we are Engineers". Whatever be the college you choose, studying Engineering as a life course, that too in a country like India is a total futile and fragile attempt . And the reasons to justify this statement is very simple. "Engineering is completely filled up with unreasonable stuff" . It's completely boring to the core ; The purpose of learning all these will forever remain unknown, but you still got to learn it. You will have no clue what you are learning and most importantly "why" you are learning it. Whatever you do, engineering will win you demoralisingly on maximum occasions . Clearing engineering without a single arrear is itself considered a majestic task and even if you somehow manage to achieve this mammoth task, still your not assured of a  job in your core and you can never dream of high salaries. You will land up in a mere job which will make you feel " was way better" .  Dat's the shear beauty of "Engineering".

The content of this piece thus being told , i was just thinking of how to end it up. A few minutes passed by  and "BEEP" a message came up in my phone . I opened  and it said  "M-3 re-test confirm macha :(  " .
Engineering triumphs once again !!

Hurray !! ....I hav found heaven ....

Central station, Marina beach, Kapaleeshwar temple, Carnatic seasons, Mahabalipuram ; These would be the first words of a globe trotter who has just visited "namma chennai". These are what Chennai is attributed to in several writings and articles. But, Chennai has got hell a lot more than this. The original (or) real face of Chennai ; it can be said , and it is little known outside it's boundaries.

Well, you chennaiites would have guessed it by now;

So, lets just take a tour of this authenitic chennai ....

Starting with the road works of Chennai, it is one of the world's most unsolvable puzzles. and the only lot who can solve this puzzles with great ease are the "auto-wallas". A trip through some of the roads will leave you totally befuddled. If you are really lucky enough you can get to your destination in time, which happens not even once in a blue moon . It's much rarer than that .  Being unlucky most of the time, you'll just have to live with the tarmac and the babble of automobiles for hours, trailing like a snail, under the hot sun . Suddenly, from nearby you can hear a yell ; " vutla soltu vantiya da baemali ?? " . It would most of the time belong to an auto-walla , and it's our very own "madras tamil" that he is speaking.

Wading through the traffic , take any turn and your most likely to sight a man lying down as if on a cosy couch. Is he a begger ?? maybe, he is one. But whomsoever he may be , he is drowning deep in pleasure, en-route to heaven , Giving no  care to the busy life beside him , free from everything and still travelling. People crossing him,  everyone gives him a gross look and a little curse, and absolutely nothing more than that .  He too needs no disturbance at all . I don't know what happens to him after that , maybe he gets up and goes down again, most probably at some other place. Thanks to the "Tasmac" !!

Travelling further and into a "meen sandhai", will fill you in with an indescribable aroma and a never before heard clattering of voices . The clattering is so much that you can't even hear what a person standing next you  says . The perfect way of describing the "meen sandhai" in madras bashai would go like this ; "Angae ore galeejakudubaa, enna poyapoo" !!  Still it's a market, and people manage to sell and buy fish without much difficult, which is why, it's "Namma Chennai".

The roads of Chennai tell you loads of things. Yes, much more than what the television can tell you . The walls of Chennai , majority of them, bear on them posters . Posters talk about every walk of life in Chennai . You can find posters depicting the happy smiling face of the political leaders, unlike that of the public, followed by the the faces of MLA's and MP's in decreasing sizes. They carry information on the "katchi manadu" which is going to be attended only by the party members. Posters depicting the hot movie releases, small posters for job vacancies which is noticed by a very few which includes the one who pasted it. And not to forget, the pan stains on these posters done by the people for 3 reasons
  1) They can't read what is written on them  and are highly frustrated by the  fact that
       they "can't read"

  2) They have some kind of a  unlikeliness towards  whatever is said in that poster
and the third , because "one" and "two" did .

Take a round around 8 or 9 in the late evening . You will be puzzled to see a huge crowd in-front of a relatively small outlet. Just look a little up and you can see the unlit board which says "tasmac shop" . You are seeing a liquor shop . Not just a liquor shop, It's the most lucrative business of the government bringing in a revenue of thousands of crores intimately, year after year after year .

The Tea kadai's , Kai endhi bhavan's ,  Beeda kadai's , Meen markets, Katchi manadu's ,The ever-congested roads, Non-stop horn honkings , Political posters ( right on the "stick no bills" sign) , Pan stained walls, Water stagnant roads, A good many beggers , The highly-crowded TASMAC wine shops , Fast foods , Half - boils and to top it all  "The Madras Bhashai " - like a cherry on the cake, will be the perfect definition for the less known  face of  Chennai .

Whatsoever said and done , Either good or bad ,  this is true and very much present. Chennai's very own people has given Chennai this .There are people, even today coming to Chennai from everywhere to earn a living . Some, who don't like all this, curse about it, and a few walk away out of it .The others love it and they live with it , for this is what they wanted.

So where is all the fuss now ??? it's just 3 months away , and no one is bothered at all . In fact why should we be ??  no use at all . Any guesses on what this is about ??  Well , i don't think you would have guessed it , coz as i said , none is bothered, in the first place .Okay, let me tell you myself what i am trying to say here . Nothing but the, once much feared "Doom's day - 21st Dec 2012".

Around 3 years ago , the entire world was abuzz with the 2012 apocalypse.Just mention the year 2012, and right from a 60 year old lady to a 16 year old teen will fill you with just one information ; "The world is going to end" . And the courtesy; Obviously the discovery channels started this as their usual slot and god knows how it gained so much popularity. The news channels came out from nowhere and did shows on this. Yes , you are right, they were undoubtedly uncertain about whatever they said . And you are once again right, that's how they are ( the news channels ) most of the time . You cannot entirely blame them for this , it's the subject they handle make them so. For example, consider the Indian politics. It is no less than a tough competitor to fiction . Fiction too can become a fact miraculously, but i doubt that with the former.

Coming back topic, The newspapers said we too can and came with crunchy rubrics.NASA, considered to be the messiah of science, too played it's part very faithfully. And to top it all "The Hollywood" considered as the face of world cinema came up with a million dollar movie - "2012". The movie made two things certain ,

             1) Roland Emmerich ,the director of the flick, can any day make such kind of sci-fiction movies and

             2) He can make only these kind of movies.

Apart from the media , an important source for this horrifying news was none other than the "Mayan's" .
And the spotty evidence they gave ; Their long run calender finally ends on 21st Dec 2012. I don't think anyone knew when it started in the first place. If a small Mayan tribe can predict the end of world and attribute it to a mere calender , Why can't we raised the "NASA" . They went on to state several reason such as,  Magnetic pole shifts , Sun storms and several such theories about which the common man had no clue of .So what did he do ??? Yes, he "Googled" it . To make things more intricate, Google had in it's possession many videos containing the animated depictions of the Sun , the Earth and other galaxies in the course of explaining the stated theories . The seeker's state was at it's pathetic best ; He/She blankly had no clue at all . Without no further choice he chose to do the ultimate thing ; to believe what NASA said  (i.e) "The world is coming to the end" . He did one more social thing , "spreading the word" and he did it astonishingly well.

As time passed, even the horrifying news of the world coming to an end, faded away. Now it's just 3 months away and i being a responsible citizen thought "why not spread the word ?? " and ended up writing this . You having read this would have thought of , well say , at least the "2012" movie , Thus making me achieve my purpose of writing this piece - "spreading the word "

“One of the most lively, amusing, boisterous, witty, and amazing experiences  I have had in  life – MY COLLEGE DAYS” ……This is what your dad, uncle, or even your grand dad would have told you....this is what, is being , and,  has been shown invariably in the cinemas too …. But believe me, this is a great piece of fiction these days.…..even more fictitious than the action sequence of Mr. Vijayakanth.

“WTF…..come to my college…sorry, sorry, My Regiment. These above said things are just a bunch of totally alien words which are found and strictly restricted to the English textbooks alone.  I am pretty sure people here, are far….very far away from all those”, will be the reply of majority of engineering college students, of today, sparing a very few lucky ones.

The rules these colleges stipulate are bizarre and crazy, and the best part, they have “paid men” to check if those foolish rules are being followed. If not (in majority of cases), they are given the highest responsibility to make the students follow them. And as a result, these men (along with their families) land up being cursed severely.  One way they are very lucky too, no human in this entire world can land up in this type of an incredible job.

What are these rules??  Well, to mention a few common ones

RULE NO 1:  Dress code – “strictly formals”. The reason the management says - “We professionalise students for the office environment”, which sounds totally stupid . They consider wearing jeans, Quoted T-shirts and Flip-flops a crime, only because they did not get to wear any of those in their college days. (The management in most institutions comprises of men in their late 60’s and 70’s)

RULE NO 2:  A clean shaven face is a must. “Hair coloring” – no way.  “Long hair” – only for girls.

RULE NO 3:  This is seen in  very few colleges, but a complete disaster for youth-hood "Strictly no talking with the opposite sex” .I seriously can’t find out one good reason for this nutty, silly thing.

And there are much more sillier ones not even worth mentioning in the first place.

“Teach me rules, ill teach you how to break them” will be the daring attitude of many fresher’s . All most all of them will be proved wrong within the first week  , and a few others who cannot accustom to these, and are a little high on the financial side,  run away to join hands with those few lucky ones, i mentioned earlier.

So, how do they make them follow???.... .This is where the IDENTITY CARD comes into the act. This plastic and a rope combination becomes almost an additional temporary organ of the body during the stay in the campus. A guy/girl sans the “ID Card” will be subjected to questioning by each and every single person they walk across (which sometimes includes even their fellow mates, as one without the id card is equal to an “alleged”) .The answers to these questions will most likely be followed by some more questions, which will be followed by further more, Until the student accepts whatever he/she is said to have done . Acceptance, having done, is followed-up by the worst part- “advices”.

With this deteriorative routine in place, the work of the “paid men” becomes very easy. All they have to do is to deprive the “non-rule follower” of his/her id card. The student after experiencing the above routine, even once, will automatically obey whatever is said to them, from the very next time.

So, why not question your right?? and the immediate reply to this……. “What’s wrong ???  does not have any place in this environment . Rules….just rules, rule the place”

If so , why don’t you hold a “strike” ??,will be your next ….. “Strike” is a prohibited word in the campus. Barely anyone caught even talking about this will be subjected to intense questioning which will be followed by “suspension” (which in few cases leads to even dismissal) if you were really planning to organize one.

Can’t you have fun without letting anyone know you are having fun??  Well, the question in itself is very absurd , but if you manage to find an answer to this unsound question and go further more, by following your answer, “KUDOS” to you . You are an “eminent survivor”.

It is a common sight now - negligence. Not an issue at all, on most probable instances . It has taken an uproot slowly and steadily into all possible routes of almost all available practices today .Even the thought of negligence has been neglected . A person talking about such things is branded "impractical , crazy , half-baked and other such adjectives available in vocabulary.

Negligence - it's become as trivial as a mobile phone to a man is .

As the apparent Einstein's prediction goes :  "the death of entire species of honey bees as a result of extensive usage of the mobile phone which leads to the death of entire human race, exactly four years later",   has been neglected as " Not going to happen for now " . This might seem  utterly impossible now .  My grandfather, in his childhood days, would not have even had the slightest idea of a technology like the "mobile phone" but he is having and using a  handy one today . Thanks to  "Apple" , "Samsung" and to the ever growing mobile phone manufacturing companies. So even the Einstein's apparent theories might come true one tragic day .

coming back to the topic.....
The negligence of an insane van driver having an opening,  as big as a monsoon time potholes found in our very own roads,  right in the walking platform of the van is totally ridiculous,  yet a fact !  The idea of covering it with a tyre is shear stupidity ..... The ever pampering  parent who is always ready for a silly shout with the van driver for dropping off their kid at the street corner , has no botherance about the huge hole that directly opens to the ground below . Neither are the school supervisors who are busy "gossiping" at P.T rooms which are solely built and now found in very few schools for this alone ! The R.T.O is all time busy ,counting notes, granting F.C's and license to even blind persons provided they are ready to spend a few thousands. He has absolutely no time to carry out this giant task : "inspection" .. I doubt , whether rto's these days, even have a clue of what this word means !

The negligence of a swimming coach, who's much bothered about almost everything other than his job as a coach....The laxity of a building contractor , his highly influential boss ...and the carelessness of the the public  . All of these have lead to the highest level of consequences : " The death of human lives" .

Even the law on "negligence of duty" has been forgotten until our protagonist claimed a few lives very recently . Every television news channel started talking about this and newspapers wrote on this . The monetary funds released as a token of condolence is just an escape strategy of the government and is of very little value . As Mr. Kamal Hassan says "marakaromo illayo .....marandhirom" ( fogive or not, we forget ! ) . All this will be forgotten very soon .

Right from the negligence of the  usage of mobile phone and the ever raising global warming issues,  which are going to have no immediate critical effect on mankind -to- the negligence of persons mentioned above and almost every other male/female which includes even me , have directly or in-directly been the cause for several unfruitful consequences.

The sad demise of small school going children in the past month,  who are in no way even near to the "r" of "responsibilty" made me write this article , which is also going to be neglected in a matter of minutes after one reads it .
